Back in 1977 Steve Englehart and Marshall Rogers (aided on this title by Ilya Hunch) had just finished their short but acclaimed run on Batman over in Detective Comics. DC must have hoped they could work the same magic on Mister Miracle. Unfortunately sales didn't reflect their fans following them from Detective to pick up the reborn Mister Miracle. Rogers left after the 23rd issue and the series was cancelled with number 25 when the DC Explosion of 1978 imploded and took a number of marginal titles with it. Still while the second run was short at least Barda got plenty of exposure in the first two issues. We pick up the story in issue 19 on New Genesis where Scott and Barda are still on their honeymoon, time being something the New Gods never lack.
Of course you just know the peace and quiet is never going to last, don't you? Cue the same villains they lost to three years ago in the last issue. Scott escapes before the Boom Tube phases out but Barda is carried off to Granny's headquarters on Earth. With the Cold War between New Genesis and Apokolips heating up no one can be spared to help Scott search for Barda so he heads off alone, picking up his old sidekick Oberon enroute. As it turns out he doesn't have to find Granny, she finds him. Scott follows Granny's orders to ditch his Mother Box and escape gimmicks (though he does sneak a couple in) before entering her headquarters in an abandoned mineshaft. The good news was that Barda wasn't in a death trap, the bad news was that Granny's brainwashing was well underway. The inevitable deathtrap for Mister Miracl followed which Scott escaped just as Granny and the boys were leaving. Granny delayed Scott long enough for the Boom Tube to phase out but Virman had dropped enough hints that Scott knew where to find them. Pow! To the Moon
