Black Canary teamed up with Johnny twice more, she skipped issue 89 but
reappearead in Flash Comics 90 and 91. By now their adventures were titled
"Johnny Thunder and the Black Canary". A brighter character might have seen
The writng on the wall but Johnny remained clueless to the end. The last time
Black Canary played second fiddle to him was in issue 91 from January 1948.

In this last team-up it turned out the Thunderbolt could be renderd
unconscious by being grounded. Which distracted our intrepid duo and got them
knocked out by the crooks pillaging a Fireworks magnate's estate. It turned
out he kept a few jumbo sized bottle rockets lying around and that gave the
villains an idea.

Luckily the Thunderbolt revived and got everyone loose before the rockets
blew but while they beat the bad guys that was it for Johnny. In the followup
issue "Black Canary" had replaced Johnny's strip and apart from a few JSA
cameos he faded out of site.
In Flash Comics 92 (Feb. '48) "Huntress of the Highways" the first solo
Black Canary story appeared. We learned quite a lot about our mysterious
heroine in this story; her secret identity of Dinah Drake, her dual identity
relationship with Private Eye Larry Lance (mirroring the Steve Trevor & Wonder
Woman/Diana Prince relationship) and, most surprising of all, that she wasn't
a natural blonde.
At any rate in this first story after discovering that Larry is being
targeted by the truck hijackers he's investigating Dinah decides to have the
Black Canary look into the case. Which soon has gets her into a confrontation
with a surprising conclusion.

It turned out that from her run of bad luck while teaming with Johnny
Thunder our heroine had learned to carry a few gizmos to help her get out of
perilous situations. Such as a blade concealed in her choker's locket that
she could trigger with her chin.
With this case cleared up Black Canary and Larry Lance went on to team
up on a fairly regular basis. Larry was a very unlucky detective, most of his
clients were murdered shortly after hiring him. With a reputation like that
and the clients dying before he got paid it's amazing he managed to stay in
business.
But while Larry often dragged Black Canary into perilous situations (many
times so she could rescue him) she could still manage to find plenty of
trouble by herself
